Man In The Sand VHS (NTSC)
Please note this is an NTSC VHS video suitable only for North America and Japan.
A 90-minute feature-length documentary on the making of the two Grammy-nominated Mermaid Avenue albums, Man In The Sand was originally screened in the UK by the BBC in February 1999.
Shot over two years, the film follows Billy as he searches for the spirit of Woody Guthrie in Oklahoma, New York and the Texas Panhandle. The film is narrated by Woody's daughter, Nora, who opens the archive of her father's unpublished works and asks Billy to write new tunes for the lost songs.
Billy is seen working at home on early demo recording of the songs before going to Chicago to link up with American alt-country rockers Wilco. Then in a Dublin studio we see Mermaid Avenue take shape. Billy also travels to Boston to record two tracks with Natalie Merchant.
Man In The Sand offers an insight into a unique recording project as Billy and his cohorts breathe life into Woody Guthrie's 50-year-old words.
